Light Up Louisville 2024 – Projection Mapping Experience
Client: City of Louisville
Production Company: Backbeat Motion
Role: Projection Mapping & Media Server Operator
As part of Louisville's annual Light Up Louisville holiday celebration, historic Metro Hall was transformed into a large-scale projection mapping canvas for the event's first-ever immersive holiday projection experience. The show served as a centerpiece of the city's seasonal kickoff, combining original animation, motion graphics, music, and storytelling to create a memorable public art installation viewed by thousands of attendees. The event also featured a coordinated drone show and holiday festivities throughout downtown Louisville.
Working with the creative team at Backbeat Motion, Dan Wagner was responsible for projection mapping, media server programming, and show playback operations. The installation utilized four 20,000-lumen projectors precisely aligned and mapped to the architectural features of Metro Hall, allowing animated content to seamlessly interact with the building's façade.
The project required detailed site measurements, projector alignment, edge blending, content calibration, and live event execution. Using Resolume Arena, the show was mapped and programmed to ensure accurate playback across the building's complex architectural surfaces while maintaining image quality and synchronization throughout the installation.
The final experience transformed a historic civic landmark into a dynamic storytelling surface, bringing large-scale motion design and projection technology to one of Louisville's most recognizable buildings and helping launch the city's holiday season in spectacular fashion.
